Netflix Lands Zac Efron’s Ted Bundy Movie Extremely Wicked

Netflix has secured a deal for Voltage Pictures’ Ted Bundy biopic, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The streaming platform is currently home to a docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, so the addition of the biopic is fitting. Zac Efron stars in the film as Bundy, the notorious killer who met his electric chair demise 30 years ago. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival receiving mostly positive reviews, and Efron has already received praise for his near-perfect portrayal of Bundy.

Director Joe Berlinger, who’s also responsible for the Netflix docuseries, looks to tell Bundy’s story from a different perspective. In the film, the life and crimes of the notorious killer are portrayed through the eyes of his long-term love interest, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), who for years remained in denial about the crimes. Recently, the docuseries has lead to Bundy receiving more attention, as it led to a widespread “hot Ted Bundy” meme from viewers. In response, Netflix reminded viewers of the man’s actions, and Efron has also made it clear that the biopic is not a “celebration” or “glorification” of his crimes. Despite that, with Netflix’s recent acquisition of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, fans of the docuseries will have something to anticipate in the future. According to THR, Netflix has secured a $9 million deal for U.S. rights and some international territories for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The streaming platform had competition in STX and Lionsgate, but their efforts in the bidding war failed. A theatrical run is planned for this upcoming fall, then the movie will presumably be added to the Netflix original film library for everyone to enjoy. Efron will be venturing into new territory with the film, as he’s mostly stuck to comedy since his High School Muscial days. And, while the film has received some criticisms for the way Bundy is highlighted in the teaser trailer, it’s important to remember that Bundy was seen in a positive light by everyone in his life for the most part before they learned of his secret activities. Adding to that, Efron has stated that the movie is going for a more honest take on who Bundy was as a person. With the recent buzz around Bundy, expect Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile to become one of the year’s most highly anticipated movies as the year progresses. A specific date for the theatrical release hasn’t been named yet, but expect one to be announced in the near future. Despite that, fans who can’t get enough of the Netflix docuseries will have to remain patient, as the biopic isn’t due for release till the fall. Luckily, there’s still time for those who haven’t watched the series to see what all the buzz is about before Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile arrives in theaters.
